there's been one other adaption of this epic fantasy quartet made in the form of a tv mini series. Both are only loose adaptions tho where the mini series uses the first two books of the quartet, the studio ghibli anime uses the last two.

I heard that the movie was crap, though, and won the Japanese equivalent of the Razzies. Although I loved Earthsea, I'm in no hurry to see this one (although it might be worth looking into at some point in time).

I think there is a bit of a spiritual aspect to the Earthsea books that might be rather hard to translate to film. The filmmaker would have to capture not only the actions, but the emotions as well. A good filmmaker may be able to accomplish this, but a less-skilled one would probably miss this important aspect of the story.
