Yup. In Lupin III (pronounced Lupin the Third, not Lupin 3) Jigen smokes cigarettes that are mangled. As an homage to the Lupin III series, Watanabe had Spike do the same in Cowboy Bebop and also styled Spike's boots off of Lupin's.
Until I found that out, I'd always wondered about Spike's smokes. Thinking Spike's beat up cigarette was to help get across how "down and out" he and Jet were most of the time or even an expression of Spike's lackadaisicalness.

I'm still looking into the mad doctor tie-in that Loxley spoke of in the City Hunter thread.

lost in translation.
in the german translation of cow boy bebop, ed is always referred to as "ed" or in the gender neutral form.
you are there for never sure If ed is a boy or a girl.
in the English translation it is mentioned that ed is a girl form the very beginning.
in the Japanese translation Ed is not as wacky as in the English or german translations.

who me wrote:...actually If you think about it spike was a tragic hero form the beginning, because he could not get over Julia...
There's a difference between tragic and pathetic.

There's true love in RL too, and it usually ends about as well as it did in Cowboy Bebop.
