I am going to list some of my favorite comics.
i know that many will be foreign but i will try to find English publisher's for you.
Asterix by R. Goscinny and A. Uderzo
this is a classic, every one in Europe knows the two love able Gaul's asterisk and obelisk who annoy poor Cesar. you will laugh till you cry, the illustrations are funny and spectacular. the puns endless (hey some of the jokes are in Latin) but best of all, people get hit with fish.
Publisher: Dargaud Publishing International. Distributed by Distribooks inc., USA.
The year is 50 B.C. All of Gaul is occupied by the Romans. All? Not quite! A village inhabited by indomitable Gauls is holding out, strong as ever, against the invader. Life is not easy for the Roman legionaries stationed in the fortified camps of Aquarium, Delirium, Nohappimedium and Opprobrium...

TinTin by Herge
there are 25 comics of Tim +0. issue zero is le Vingtieme Siecle, and was the first book. but it was so bad that Herge did not *beep* to be reprinted. I have a copy and it is so bad that i would not recommend it to any one.
the first book came out in the 1930- and the last 1973 but they have been reprinted since then with out interruption.
originally a children's story it works on so many levels that adults can love it to.
lots of word play and in jokes. best to read them in order
now tin tin is in English Tim the reporter. he and his faith full dog snowy go and adventures all over the world, along the way he makes friends who start to accompany him
such as captain Haddock who's excessive drinking cursing and fighting off band aids that seem to stick with him is hilarious.
later Chthbert Calculus joins the team, a brilliant scientist who is just a bit hard of hearing. miss understanding everything he still knows what is going on.
the bad guys also have personality and depth, in one book (flight 714 to Sydney) two of the arch villains . Rastapopoulos and Carreidas get into a shouting match on just who is the greater villain, if familiar with the series one knows the big things they have done but they talk entirely about how in 1903 he stole a pair, and other minor delinquency's committed while children.
have not found a publisher but you can get them over amazon.
they are also many web pages devoted to tin tin.

"Foxtrot" and "Prince Valiant". There. Only because some people here don't like the idea of "effort"...

Plaine and simple, SPIDERMAN.
"They are a curious thing, these emotions. How they fly in the face of logic, how they overrule the most basic instincts. Because, in the measure of time, in the measure of humanity, we sense those self-indulgent instincts to be a weakness, we sense that the needs of the community must outweight the desires of the one. Only when we admit to our failures and recognize our weaknesses can we rise above them. Together." -Drizzt Do'Urden

a anther of my favorite comics is wormy.
http://www.angelfire.com/wa2/haroog/archive/Archive.htm
you can read most of it at the link above. apparently it was originally printed in the early issued of dragon magazine.
it is about a dragon and his imp and how they "find" some red balls that have a nice surprise in them. lots of sub plots and funny stuff. if you find any of the episodes that are not in the archive send them to me. i would love to read the entire comic.

as you all know I am a fan of enki Bilal.
he is a film maker and comic book artist.
you can get all of his comics in English from humanoids publishing.

my favorites are the nikopol trilogy
This comic collection follows the journey of Alcide Nikopol in the company of the vengeful god Horus and Jill Bioskop, a mysterious woman with blue hair, from Paris to Berlin, Cairo to Equator City. The tale is a unique mix of science fiction, and strangeness. it helps to know a but about french politics but it is not necessary.
and the beast trilogy. only the first two book's are out.

How is it possible to know ANYTHING about French politics? Even the French POLITICIANS know nothing of French politics!

one of my favorites
watchmen.
"Set in an alternative history in which superheroes are real, Watchmen is an adventure and crime drama that incorporates moral philosophy, popular culture, history, art, and science.
The core plot is the unfolding of a conspiracy revealed by the investigation of a superhero's murder. Around this the story weaves many related strands exploring human nature and different ethical approaches to the conflict between good and evil, via the personal histories and relationships of the main characters and the broader history of costumed adventurers and comic books.
Moral accountability is a major theme, and the title Watchmen refers to the Latin "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes", often translated as "Who watches the watchmen?", from Juvenal's Satire VI Against Women."

this is one of the few comic books that you can read and just about every time you discover something that you did not notice before.
