Flight Simulator 2004

Post by Boikat »

Okay, it's not SF or Fantasy, strictly speaking, But still, I gotta be me. :)

I just buzzed the Space Needle in a de Havilland DH-88 "Comet", then took a Learjet 45 for a spin around St. Louis.

Yes, I flew through the Arch. :bigsmiley:

I chose FS 2004 because I saw an add-on for a B-52, somewhere. :D

Didn't download the B-52 yet. Downloaded the Mig-31 Firefox (From the movie of the same name).

"Boy, is this a machine."

Kind of sucks on loops though. It seems to lose stability at the bottom of the loop. I must be doing something wrong. (Hey! I looped a 747!!!)

Even better, I found a site with scads of add-on aircraft, and also a "Miscellaneous" category, stocked full of such interesting "aircraft" as the NCC-1701, A, and D, Voyager, Klingon D-7, Klingon BoP, Romulan Bird of Prey (original series), the Flying Sub from Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, A veritech (Roy Fokker Special), a Gundam suit (That does all three conversions), A couple of Star Trek shuttles, ST Captains Yacht, and another oddity that I call "The Arm Chair Aviator" (An easy chair with occupant and a joy stick on the right arm rest).

And that's just the odd-balls. The real aircraft has pretty much everything that ever go off the ground under it's own power, and a number of gliders, too.

The downloads are free, *but* a 19.99 registration fee gets you a year of faster downloads. I plan on shelling out the bucks if for no other reason than as many "I wants" that I plan on downloading, I'd feel guilty if I didn't . :)

They also have some plug-ins for special effects, like the fireball and flying pieces and parts for those occasions when you nose diving into the ground at 700 knots. (I wonder if it replicates the warp core losing containment if you crash a Galaxy Class Star Ship?)

First round of downloads:

Voyager, OS Enterprise, NX-1, Movie 1701 phase II, 1701-D Klingon cruiser, bird of prey, Romulan OS Bird of Prey, Police Vtol thing, Sport Blimp, Captains Yacht, Naboo fighter, VF1s Valkyrie.

Unfortunately, none of the starship's do very well, except in the "time to climb". The captains yacht is okay, the Naboo fighter flies like a bat out of hell, the VF1s..well, it was *free*.

The blimp, the Naboo fighter and the VtoL thing are pretty interesting, in that they are rather "uniqie". The Naboo fighter gets a little wild since it has no tail surfaces.

Let me know if I'm boreing anyone... :P

Boikat Airlines: No flight is ever "routine"!

Attention passengers, this is your captain speaking. Just to break up the monotony, we will be experiencing several "low gravity" events as I put the 747 through a series of ballistic maneuvers. The stewardesses will now pass out barf bags to those of you who may feel the need....

Attention passengers, this is your captain again. If you look out your window, you will notice the ground is where the sky should be, and the sky is where the ground should be. Yes. We are inverted. Please sit back and enjoy the rather unique experience that you will never experience on any other airline, with their stupid rules and regulations.

Attention passengers, this is your captain again. Pay no mind to those F-16 escorts. They say I strayed into a "restricted air space". How can you have a "restricted air space" in the middle of Nevada? Now, according to my map, there's an "area 51" around here somewhere, but these schmucks in the heavily armed F-16's refuse to confirm or deny that this "area 51" place exists. Now, if they say refuse to admit it exists, then I figure I can refuse to follow their orders to land or get shot down... Um, please make sure your trays are in the upright and stowed positions, and that your seat belts are firmly fastened, sins it looks like I'm going to have to take some evasive maneuvers. Looks like one of those fighter jocks is fixing to get a little trigger happy..

Attention passengers, this is your captain speaking. While it is true that flying a 747 through the grand canyon is frowned upon, I had to shake those pesky F-16s because they were tail-gating, which is unsafe at any speed. I also apologize to anyone who may have experience a brief moment of ...anxiety.. when we lost about six feet of wing when we clipped that rock spire. Not a problem, I can always lose six feet from the other side since we have a lot of wing out there....

Once again, thank you for flying Boikat Airlines

That explains the flame-out's on engine number four...and three, and two, and one. Hmmm, attention passengers, this is your captain speaking.. We may be arriving a little late. How late? Well, that depends on how long it takes the search party to find the wreckage. Please assume the 'crash position', and once again, I'd like to thank you for flying Boikat Airlines. Have a nice day!e

FSX has a lot of Battlestar Galactica ships. I'm not to happy with the scale though. If I recall, the Galactica was supposed to be about a mile long. The one for FS-X can't be more than a quarter of a mile long, if that.

You know you're flying too close to the ground when the computer keeps saying "You're sick" :)

In general, it is nice that both sims have SF ship addons. Of the two, FS-X has rendering that is much better than FS-9 (2004)

FS-X add on's with a nice SF bend:

Battle star Galactic ships, The fighter jet from "Stealth", Babylon 5 Star fury, White star, Star Trek ships, and a lunar module and the space shuttle "Atlantis"
