Evil Protagonists Wanted!

Post by Aryus »

Hello

I have spent a lot of time searching for examples of sci-fi and fantasy fiction in which the protagonists displays the characteristics usually seen in antagonists. I do not mean the "anti-hero" who still ends up fighting for "good." I mean someone with a decidedly evil persuasion.

Picture the classic dark sorcerer, mad scientist, or evil warlord bent on world/galactic domination that are so common as the "bad guys" in virtually all sci-fi and fantasy stories. Now, place that character as the main, central character with the story told from his point of view.

Does an example of this exist or even something close to it? I have read so much fiction in which the "good guys" win that it is not worth reading anymore. It is all just so predictable.

The closest things I have ever seen to this are Drew Karpshyhn's Darth Bane series (which are pretty good examples of what I am talking about), and Karl Edward Wagner's Kane stories (which I have not read and are very difficult to find).

It seems that this is an entirely open genre, and I am hungry for more!

Welcome to Speculative Vision, Aryus!

I'm sure there must be stories from a vampire's point of view- I've read some but it has been too long ago to remember the title or author.

I googled science fiction evil protagonist, and this site may have something close to what you are looking for:

I do like the idea. Especially a non-vampire protagonist would be intriguing.

I hope that someone else here can offer better suggestions.

Thank you very much for the reply.

As a matter of fact, a couple of years ago I wrote the first chapter of a fantasy story in which the protagonist is a lone evil vampire bent on conquering a nation. I should get back to work on it!

It seems to me that a vampire would be perfect for this type of role, but so often they are presented as softies and tragic heroes rather than as powerful evil geniuses. Sad.

Picking up on the Vampire idea many of Anne Rice's novels would fit that mold. Some Stephen King books would also fit. Christine and The Shining come to mind.

Its really a tough one. Even most monster themes have some redeeming qualities to gain reader empathy. I'm having a hard time thinking of examples.

Welcome to SV, Aryus.

Are you familiar with the Raistlin Majere character in the Dragonlance saga?

Look into the Elric series. Can't remember who wrote them but he's a complete ass!

Hey, you try being an albino!

Well Elric was an albino. That can make ya grumpy. Also a wicked sword which didn't help matters. The author is Michael Moorcock.

Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel movies fits the bill. Sure, we know he is redeemed at the end of the saga, but as far as the prequel group goes, the story is that of an evil protagonist.

There's actually three different roles involved (I think I read this in Orson Scott Card's book):
  • The hero who is trying to accomplish a positive goal the readers are expected to endorse and hope for
  • The protagonist whose choices drive the plot forward and who is the main focus of the story
  • The viewpoint character through whose eyes we see the events
They can all three be different.

I wonder if Ghost Rider would fit the bill? He sold his soul to the devil, after all. And there have been others throughout lit who have done this. Did Dorian Gray?

I luv the Darth Bane reference, my favorite Star Wars books!

I think Dorian Grey wanted to live forever so a gypsy, I believe, painted him a cursed pic. where it grew old and he stayed young. I never read the story personally but I had a teacher who talked about it.
